Black History Month

Black History Month

Every February, we honor Black History Month—a time to reflect on the rich contributions, resilience, and achievements of Black individuals throughout history. This month serves as a powerful reminder of the struggles and triumphs that have shaped our society, highlighting the legacies of pioneers like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and countless others.

Beyond remembering the past, Black History Month is also about celebrating Black excellence today—in arts, science, politics, and beyond. It’s a chance to uplift voices, support Black-owned businesses, and educate ourselves on the ongoing pursuit of justice and equality. We'd like to take a minute to remember some of the highlight's of Detroit's Black history in honor of this month.

Detroit & Black History Month

Detroit has long been a hub for Black culture, civil rights, and innovation. The city played a major role in the Great Migration, offering opportunities for Black families seeking better lives. It became a center for activism, music, business, and political power.

Key Figures & Moments in Detroit’s Black History:

  • The Underground Railroad – Detroit was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, helping enslaved people escape to freedom in Canada. The Second Baptist Church served as a key station.
  • Rosa Parks' Legacy – After her historic bus protest, Rosa Parks moved to Detroit, where she continued her activism for civil rights and social justice.
  • Motown Records – Founded in 1959 by Berry Gordy, Motown revolutionized music, launching legendary Black artists like Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, and Marvin Gaye.
  • The 1967 Rebellion – A pivotal moment in the city’s history, highlighting racial tensions and the fight for economic and social justice.
  • Coleman A. Young – Elected in 1973, Young became Detroit’s first Black mayor, serving for 20 years and shaping the city’s modern political landscape.

Detroit’s Black history is deep, influential, and worth celebrating—not just in February, but every day.

FedUp wants to recognize the many Black community members who support and work with us. This month has been celebrated in the United States since 1970 and every year we continue to show our support to family, friends, and colleagues by advocating for just policies and contributing to creating safe places for Black folks, especially those affected by a racialized justice and housing system. While we celebrate the historical advocacy in America, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. The prison industrial complex disproportionately and severely affects Black men. To show your support, check out the CCDAs locked in solidarity at mailchi.mp.

Join us this month in recognizing and honoring Black history—not just in February, but all year round!

Locked In Solidarity

Locked In Solidarity

Did you know Pastor Anna is part of a national organization called the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA)? In October of 2024, Pastor Anna and Maddie, our Director of Programs, went to the CCDA’s national conference and learned more about their commitment to solidarity with those who are incarcerated across our country.

Did you know that in 2024, the United States had over 1.9 million incarcerated individuals? That’s a quarter of the world’s prison population—an alarmingly disproportionate figure given the U.S. population. The gospel calls us to remember those who are incarcerated, stand in solidarity with them, and reflect God’s love in their lives. This February, we will join in the CCDA’s Locked In Solidarity Week by writing letters and scheduling video visits with our friends who are currently incarcerated. If you’d like to join in this work, please reach out to Pastor Anna (pastoranna@fedupministries.org) or Sheri Wander (peacehouseypsi@gmail.com).

Hebrews 13:3

"Remember those who are in prison, as though you were in prison with them; those who are being tortured, as though you yourselves were being tortured."
